BFM® Fitting Installations: New Systems vs. Retrofitting Solutions

BFM® fittings can be installed in two primary scenarios:

  1. As part of a new system design, or

  2. Retrofitted into existing processing equipment.

When integrated into new facility designs, a BFM® fitting installation is typically straightforward. Most system designers are already familiar with BFM® components, including spigots and their specifications, making them easy to incorporate from the ground up.

However, retrofitting into existing systems can present more questions—and that’s where we come in.

Retrofitting BFM® Fittings: Welded & Non-Welded Options

Depending on your facility’s layout and installation goals, we offer two primary retrofitting paths: non-welded and custom welded solutions.

Non-Welded BFM® Installation Options

To minimize disruption and downtime, BFM® spigots can be adapted to connect with various flange types, avoiding direct welding to your existing equipment. The most common non-welded options include:

  • ANSI flanges

  • Ferrules

  • Jacob’s tubing

In these configurations, the BFM® spigot is welded to the ferrule or flange—not directly to your process piping—allowing for quicker installation, easier maintenance, and faster changeovers.

Custom-Welded Retrofitting Solutions

For more complex scenarios, custom retrofitting may be required. Our experienced PSI engineering team is here to guide you every step of the way—whether that’s over the phone, via virtual consultation, or with an on-site visit.

Common challenges we solve include:

  • Square-to-round transitions
We can design and fabricate custom square flanges that transition smoothly into a round spigot to accommodate BFM® sleeves.

  • Incorrect sleeve angles or lengths
We’ll recommend tubing or piping modifications to ensure proper fit and alignment.

  • Abrasive product handling
For facilities handling abrasive materials, we offer flow correction plates within the spigot to guide product flow away from the sleeve and reduce wear.

If a proposed installation is unlikely to succeed, we won’t just say no—we’ll provide smart alternatives tailored to your process.
